Singapore Dreaming
I was just watching the movie "Singapore Dreaming" with my parents.
It's a really good show, about the very real situations that are happening with people in SIngapore nowadays. I don't know about you people reading this: But I am sensing a phenomenon in SIngapore. I think our people are too blindly seeking fortune (and fame, for that matter), that we are forgetting the real meaning of life.
The movie targets several very real issues, e.g.: fighting for money, depending on toto for money, women being the breadwinner of the family and the problems it brings...blah blah blah...
However, what really caught me was this "quote" by a PRC actress in the show. She was talking to Lim Yu Beng (who, by the way is a "useless" husband who is selling insurance and can't clinch deals. The wife was pregnant, and she was like the sole breadwinner in the family. As a result, she always looks down on the husband, and will always make him feel inferior).
So, they were at her father's (played by Richard Low) funeral, and she just had a very bad quarrel with him. He went to a coffee shop to drink, and was served by this PRC woman. He was complaining how he couldn't pursue his dreams of becoming a singer because he didn't have the money, and the PRC woman was also saying that she couldn't pursue her dreams of becoming a fashion designer because she didn't have money. He said that they were in the same plight. Then she said "no".
This was what she said:
你是为了钱,而放弃你的理想,去做自己不喜欢的工作。
而我,是为了自己的理想,而去做自己不喜欢的工作赚钱。
Loosely translated, it means that "Because of money, you give up your dreams and do something which you don't like. However, for me, it is BECAUSE of my dream that I am doing something I don't like, so that I can pursue my dreams".
It made me stop and think: Is it true?
Upon reflection, the sad truth is: yes. It is true. How many of us are TRULY doing what we want to do? Haven't we all wanted to be a singer, to be an artist, to be a photographer?
How many of us have been told "be practical, get a good job, and come back to earth. Being a photographer has no future in SIngapore one lah..."
Penny for your thought?
